Jeremy Blackwood, D.M.A.

Dr. Jeremy Blackwood serves as Chair of the Department of Music and Vocal Coordinator at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In addition to teaching Applied Voice and serving as Director of Opera Southeaster, he is the Coordinator for the Musical Arts Series. In his 13th year, he most recently served as a co-presenter at the 2018 Oklahoma Music Educators Association Conference with A Deeper Look at Vocal Technique.

 

Dr. Blackwood serves as Music Director for Opera Southeastern and for productions in collaboration with Theatre at Southeastern each year.  Opera productions include Dido and Aeneas, Gallantry, The Telephone, Hansel and Gretel, Die Fledermaus, Opera Gala, and Amahl and the Night Visitors. Joint-productions with Theatre at Southeastern include Little Women, My Fair Lady, Young Frankenstein, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Les Misérables, Chicago, Sweeney Todd, and Xanadu. Additionally, Dr. Blackwood serves as resident Music Director for the Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival held on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University whose productions include Big River, Cinderella, Drowsy Chaperone, Shrek, Legally Blonde, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Once Upon a Mattress, and Oliver!.

 

As a Lyric Bass, Dr. Blackwood is an active recitalist and performer most recently performed with colleagues presenting an original work, Four Guys Named Al compiled by Dell McLain, Manic Melodies by Paul Sweet and Liebeslieder Walzer Johannes Brahms, and a premier of Voices in the Night by Paul David Thomas at Dallas Baptist University. Operatic roles include Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Vietri sul Mare, Italy; St. Peter in Too Many Sopranos, the title role in Don Pasquale, Antonio in The Marriage of Figaro, Mr. Lindquist in A Little Night Music, Bonze in Madame Butterfly, Pandolfe in Cendrillion, Superintendent Budd in Albert Herring and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. His role in Cosi fan tutte also landed him an opportunity to perform the role of Don Alfonso in Castelfranco Vento, Italy with the collaboration students from UNT and the Stefano Conservatorio. Dr. Blackwood has had the opportunity to work under the baton of Maestro Joseph Walsh with Virginia Opera and Maestro Graeme Jenkins with Dallas Opera. While at Southeastern, Dr. Blackwood has been a featured soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Vaughn Williams’ Hodie and the Graun Magnificat with the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Symphonic Choir.

Dr. Blackwood earned a Doctor of Musical Arts (vocal performances with a related field in vocal pedagogy) and Master of Music (vocal performance with a related field in Opera Theatre) from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Arkansas State University. Vocal instructors and related field study advisors include Dr. Linda Di Fiore, Dr. Stephen Austin, Dr. Cody Garner, Paula Homer, and Julia Lansford. Dr. Blackwood has collaborated with vocal coaches Rogelio Riojas-Nolasco, Dr. Elvia Puccinelli, Harold Heiberg, and Dr. Stephen Dubberly.

In addition to the active performing and studio teaching, Dr. Blackwood serves as the President for the Oklahoma District of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, President of the Red River Arts Council, and the Vice-President of the Oklahoma Association of Music Schools. He is in demand as an adjudicator on the state and regional level. Professional memberships include Pi Kappa Lambda and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
